The tablecloth inertia trick is a well-known physics demonstration that illustrates Newton’s First Law of Motion—the law of inertia! In this trick, a tablecloth is swiftly pulled out from beneath dishes or other items resting on a table. Due to their inertia, the objects resist changes to their state of rest and largely remain in place as the cloth is removed. For the trick to succeed, the cloth must be pulled quickly, smoothly, and horizontally to reduce friction and minimize the force applied
